It’s fall. For some people, this time of year marks the return to universities full time, either in person or on-line. For others, it means fitting in university classes at night on a part time basis, while simultaneously juggling the duties of full-time work and family.
I have some photographs from my undergraduate days. My hair is definitely a lot longer. My smile is still very broad. As a student, I explored the endless possibilities for the future. The future after graduation with a Journalism degree took me through a series of twists and turns that led me into a career in technical communications. The STC Philadelphia Metro Chapter (STC-PMC) supported my first steps from a Drexel University graduate student to my first technical communications job. PMC members shared their knowledge and expertise with a newbie like me. I could learn a new skill or concept from a speaker at an STC PMC meeting, then apply it at work the next day. As I have continued to learn and evolve in my technical communications career, I find that PMC speakers and members continue to share their knowledge and expertise with a continual learner like me.
If you are a student in the university communities in the Philadelphia, Delaware, and New Jersey area who is interested in technical communications, STC-PMC would like to invite you to attend any of our monthly meetings.
We’re holding our November 12th meeting at Drexel University. Come meet people who are working in the industry. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student, this meeting will be a great first step in your career after college. If you are interested in finding out more about the benefits of membership in STC, check out the 2015 STC Student Flyer.
I’m the Academic Outreach Chair for PMC. If you are a student or professor who is involved in a writing or technical communication-related program, PMC would like to invite you to start a dialogue with the chapter at [email protected]. We’ll be looking for you at our next meeting! Sign up now.
