Are you aware that the federal government has requirements for how you communicate? If you use video, it needs to be both captioned and audibly described. Is your documentation on the web? It needs to be accessible. But what does it mean to be accessible? What are the laws governing accessibility, and how do they relate to your profession? In this presentation, Paul Paire from Temple University will cover:

About the Presenter
Paul Paire has served as Executive Director of Special Projects in Computer Services at Temple University since 2007. As an Executive Director, Paul has been responsible for implementing technology solutions through solo efforts, traditional project management, and crowdsourcing. Paul brings the end users’ perspective to projects he works on as a result of his 20 years of experience in desktop support and client services before becoming Executive Director of Special Projects. Paul holds a B.S. degree in Computer Sciences from Millersville University and an M.B.A. in Information Systems from Temple University. He has presented at both regional and national venues on accessibility topics.

Digital games have come a long way since the early days of Pong and Pac Man. Driven by the belief that the “digital native” generations moving into the workplace are skilled gamers, learning specialists are ushering in a new age of digital games that integrate game mechanics and learning content into learning experiences at every level. This new age of games, called serious games and game-based learning, is also beginning to affect the social frameworks of corporate user assistance and education. The challenge is to create game experiences with tools available to learning specialists like Captivate, Storyline, and PowerPoint.
In this presentation we will look at examples and practical ideas in game-based learning design that you can apply to develop more engaging e-learning.
You will learn:
– The things you need to change in yourself to apply game mechanics to e-learning
– A definition of games that you can usefully apply to e-learning design
– The “must have” characteristics of games that immediately change e-learning for the better
– Principles of story-based design that you can use in an e-learning environment
Our Speaker: Cheri Lockett Zubak
You might know STC Associate Fellow Cheri Lockett Zubak from her days as “online help guru,” when she spent much of her time sharing her ideas about how to create great online help systems. Cheri’s life has since morphed into instructional design, e-learning development, performance improvement, and customer research. Cheri has earned a graduate certificate in Game-Based Learning (Drexel University) and is pursuing a degree in Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning (Boise State University).
