STC-Philadelphia Metro Chapter Scholarship

STC-PMC ScholarshipOverview

The Society for Technical Communication - Philadelphia Metro Chapter (STC-PMC) offers a $500 scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year. This scholarship is awarded in spring of 2010 for the following academic year.

The STC-PMC Scholarship Committee is accepting scholarship applications for the Fall 2010 through Spring 2011 academic year. This scholarship program assists students who are obtaining an undergraduate degree and intend to pursue a career in technical writing, editing, graphic design, interface design, web design, and other jobs in the field of technical communications. The Scholarship Committee evaluates applicants' academic records and potential for contributing to the technical communication profession.

Judging will take place in March; the winner will be notified by phone and mail. Checks will be disbursed and the scholarship recipients will be formally recognized at the STC-PMC chapter conference in March. In addition to the $500, scholarship winners will also be awarded a student level STC membership.

Application Information

 

  • Attending a college full-time the Philadelphia area (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Mercer, or New Castle Counties)
  • Working toward a Bachelor’s degree with an interest in the technical communication field.  Students must be studying communication of information about technical subjects. Other majors, such as general journalism, electronic engineering, computer programming, creative writing, or entertainment, are not eligible.
  • Current sophomores and juniors who have completed at least one year of post-secondary education and have at least one year remaining before completion of the degree.

Each applicant’s scholarship request should include the following items:

  • A 1-2 page cover letter describing his/her interest/experiences in the area of technical communication

  • A résumé

  • A sealed transcript signed by the registrar from the school currently or last attended showing grade point average

  • Two signed and sealed letters of recommendation from professors or internship sponsors

  • A completed STC Scholarship application form (.pdf)

Applicants should not send samples of work, as the committee will not review samples.

Applicants MUST use a form of postal delivery that does not require a signature from the recipient. Delivery could be delayed if the recipient is not available to sign for the package.

 2008-2009 STC-PMC Scholarship Awarded

JoLynn Holloman and Meghan McHughAt the annual conference in Great Valley on March 28, 2009, STC-PMC announced the winners of its student scholarship competition, presenting a $1,000 scholarship to JoLynn Holloman and runner-up awards to Meghan McHugh and Theresa Monaco.  Ms. Holloman, Ms. McHugh, and Ms. Monaco were selected from a pool of applicants from colleges and universities in the metropolitan region of Philadelphia

JoLynn Holloman, recipient of the Student Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement in a field relating to technical communication, attends Arcadia University where she is earning a Bachelor's degree in Communications with a minor in Fine Arts. JoLynn has spent her spring breaks in New Orleans working on restoration and repair projects. In 2008 she traveled to India. Her writings about the trip have been published in Little India, the largest Indian publication in the United States. Additionally, she assisted in the shooting, editing, and production of a video for EducationWorks, a Philadelphia-area organization dedicated to assisting students in an after-school style program.

Due to the large number of quality applications received this year, a special decision was made to provide students with runner-up awards. The two runners-up each received a student membership with STC and a free pass to the PMC conference in March.  Recipient Meghan McHugh attends Philadelphia University where she majors in Professional Communications and is also a resident assistant.  Theresa Monaco attends the University of Delaware and is majoring in English. She is an active member of the rugby team.

2006-2007 STC-PMC Scholarship Awarded

STC-PMC is proud to announce the winner of the 2006-2007 STC-PMC Scholarship: Stacey Kauffman!

Stacey Kauffman, La Salle University class of 2008, received a $1,000 Scholarship from the Philadelphia Metro Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC-PMC).

On March 17, 2007 STC-PMC announced the recipient of its 2007 Student Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement in a field relating to technical communication. Ms. Kauffman was selected from a pool of applicants from colleges and universities in the metropolitan region of Philadelphia.

Formal recognition was given to Ms. Kauffman during the opening ceremonies of the STC-PMC Annual Conference held on March 17 at the Great Valley campus of Penn State University. Congratulations, Stacey!

2005-2006 STC-PMC Scholarship Awarded

Kimberly Coles - 2006 STC-PMC Scholarship Winner!STC-PMC is proud to announce the winner of the 2005-2006 STC-PMC Scholarship: Kimberly Coles!

Kim is originally from the Pottstown, PA area, and attends the University of Delaware. She is in the university's honors program working on a degree that combines English with business and technical writing, interactive media, Spanish, and chemistry.

Consistently on the dean's list, Kim expects to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May of 2007.
