Free Webinar: Effective Strategies for Virtual International Collaboration

The STC Academic SIG invites faculty and students to join Rajdeep Gupta as he discusses Virtual International Collaboration.

The free, online webinar will take place in Adobe Connect on April 28, 2016, at 8:30 a.m. CDT (-5 GMT). Note the speaker is based in India.

Topic: Based on the collaborations conducted with different groups of American, Chinese, and Indian students, Rajdeep discusses the principles of effective strategies for conducting virtual international collaborations with students in technical communication. International collaboration has expanded student and instructor learning and has opened up intriguing possibilities. The presentation can assist instructors to develop successful virtual intercultural collaborations that prepare students for the workplace.

Profile: Rajdeep Gupta has 10+ years’ experience in Technical Communication, Sales and Marketing, Project Management, and Translation. He has worked for Infosys, Misys, and Author-it before starting Blue Dots Consultancy Services. At present, he is the Managing Director of Blue Dots. He has approximately 3500 training hours teaching professionals such as software developers, technical writers, project managers and others in XML and DITA, Cloud, CMS, and Customer Focused Documentation. Rajdeep is a former STC India Chapter President and has also held several other chapter officer roles. In 2012, he received the STC Distinguished Chapter Service Award. Rajdeep has an MBA in Information Systems and a Diploma in Cyber Laws.

Join us on Friday, April 1st for a full-day workshop with Neil Perlin!

Creating Mobile Apps Without Coding

Responsive design lets us port online help to mobile devices. But what if you need more features than help authoring tools can create, such as help that knows where it’s located and automatically revises itself accordingly? Or a help system for the general public that can sell tools and support services to users as part of the help? Or a help system with a built-in camera that can take a photo and send it to tech support? Help authoring tools can’t easily create such features; app development tools can. And app development tools are becoming as usable as help authoring tools.

In this workshop, you’ll build a simple but fully functional app that can run on both iPhones and Android phones. You’ll do this using the app equivalent of Flare or RoboHelp. You’ll:

  • Get an overview of app concepts and differences between hybrid and web apps.
  • Get an overview of app design concepts and principles.
  • Create a simple app that can send an email, access an external web page, and let the user add and recall data from a simple database. The result could be truly interactive user assistance or even true apps.

When you finish, you’ll have a simple but functional app to display back home in your company, and one that may start you thinking about going beyond the bounds of traditional tech comm.

WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS

You will need to bring a laptop (with charging cord and a mouse) and smartphone (iPhone or Andriod) to this workshop.You cannot use a tablet for this workshop.

Your devices must meet the following criteria:

  • A Windows laptop running Windows 7+, or an up-to-date Mac laptop.
  • Firefox 10+, IE 9+, Google Chrome 12.0+, or Opera 11+.
  • An iPhone 4, 5, or 6 running iOS 8+, or an Android phone running Android 4+.

You MUST also perform a couple pre-workshop tasks.

  • Set up a Google account, if you do not have one.
  • Set up a Gmail account, if you do not have one.
  • Create a Viziapps account, if you do not have one.
  • Install the free Viziapps App.

Complete instructions will be sent to you.

About the Speakers

John Welsh is a Philadelphia area photographer/filmmaker, has taught photography privately, through the Wayne Art Center, and also through an ongoing photography workshop with the Honors Program at Villanova University. He is an active member of the American Society of Media Photographers, has served as President of the Philadelphia Chapter and is currently a Director on the National Board. His ongoing projects and work as a partner at SightSense Productions and Vision Pictures, include a documentary film about the fate of the Huber Breaker, the last of its kind located in Ashley, PA.  A film about the life of portrait painter Ralph W. Cowan, a photographic series exploring the Delaware River in its entirety and various visual evolutions of his work in Iceland.

Alana Mauger

Alana Mauger is a professional writer and communicator with close to 20 years of experience in the areas of journalism, corporate and non-profit PR, crisis communications, social media, and radio. She is currently employed by Montgomery County Community College as its Director of Communications, and she also does freelance communications work for a number of organizations in the region. A storyteller by passion and profession, Alana is a writer and co-producer for the documentary film project “Beyond the Breaker.” She holds degrees in humanities, professional writing, and education. Her non-writing interests include art, music, ice hockey, and many types of activism.
