Benjamin Franklin, the famous founding father from Philadelphia, was a scientist, a writer, and a diplomat, mostly famous for his discovery of electricity. It could be argued, therefore, that with these qualities, he was one of the first American technical communicators with these skills. Franklin was known for explaining his scientific and philosophical findings through the written word, and being someone who liked to network with others to bring about community.

It is in that spirit that we bring you CONDUIT – Connecting Minds, the STC-PMC Mid-Atlantic Conference. Our objective is to help technical communicators from all backgrounds connect to share new ideas and concepts with each other in this digital age.

CONDUIT will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015 between 8:15 AM and 4:30 PM at the Giant Conference Center in Willow Grove, PA, just outside of Philadelphia.

Join us for our annual full-day conference featuring multiple sessions in three tracks following a keynote presentation by Harold Hambrose, CEO and founder of Electronic Ink, as well as several local and international experts presenting.

The conference will feature a variety of topics including content strategy, user experience, technical writing, and much more. There will be plenty of opportunities to connect and network with your peers.

Smartphones have sparked a huge, new software segment – the mobile app. This creates an important pair of questions for user assistance professionals: What is our role going forward in mobile and how can we prepare to take that on? User Assistance does have a role in supporting mobile apps. As the mobile app market continues to soar, this is becoming the next frontier for user assistance professionals. This session provides an overview of current issues regarding design, writing, tools, and planning of your mobile UA.

Why traditional desktop UA translates poorly to the small screen.
What techniques are particularly useful to employ.

About the Presenters

Tom Thew serves as a Partner at Relevante and is a member of the Management Team with responsibility to provide strategic and operational direction for the firm. His primary responsibility is to lead the Relevante Direct Hire Practice. As a part of this role Tom provides the practice strategy and overall operational focus for the team, while managing his own book of business. Tom has been promoted several times while at Relevante and has held roles such as Recruiting Manager, Director of Recruiting and Managing Director before taking his current role in 2013. Tom holds a Bachelors’ degree from the University of Shippensburg and lives in Philadelphia with his wife and two sons.

Matthew Allen serves as a Business Development Manager for Relevante’s Direct Contract and Permanent Placement function. Matthew’s primary responsibility is to establish a working relationships with companies, nationwide, who have a need for staff augmentation and/or recruiting support. In addition to maintain a sustainable pipeline of clients, Matthew is heavily involved with Relevante’s RecOps which is focused on recruiting Accounting/Finance and IT Professionals. Matthew leveraged his sales background and people skills to transition into the recruiting industry where he has seen consistent success. Matthew holds a Bachelors’ Degree from California State University and lives in Downingtown PA.

EXTENDED DEADLINE for our Call for Presenters! HURRY!

The Call for Presenters has been extended to February 1st!

The conference is hosted by the STC Philadelphia Metro Chapter and will be held on Saturday, March 28 at the Giant Conference Center in Willow Grove, PA.

The annual event attracts presenters and attendees from the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as other parts of the country. The day is typically organized into three or four tracks with a total of nine or more presentations. Sessions are approximately 50 minutes, and are conducted in a classroom setting.

Being a presenter provides you with an opportunity to share your expertise and hone your public speaking skills in front of a diverse group of writers, trainers, and other TechComm professionals. The deadline for submissions has been extended to Sunday, February 1, 2015. If your proposal is selected, we will notify you by February 16.

We hope you will consider participating at our conference and look forward to receiving your presentation proposal. If you have any questions, please contact us at conference@stcpmc.org.
