Mastering Responsive Design with MadCap Flare
Neil Perlin
Flare has “responsive” features – responsive output and responsive layout – but how do you use them together? What’s the overall process of making a project responsive? Find out in this hands-on workshop. We’ll make a tiny but representative project responsive by:
- Enabling the responsive output option and setting breakpoints.
- Formatting each medium using the Skin editor.
- Modifying content using the Responsive Layout editor.
- Creating truly adaptive content (think changing “click” to “tap” automatically as the screen size changes) by working in the CSS.
- Examining how to modify tables and graphics to make them fully responsive.
The result will be a fully responsive target that can take full advantage of desktop, tablet, and phone displays.
NOTE: Attendees will need to bring a laptop running either a fully-licensed version or a 30-day trial version of Flare 2018 at a minimum. More details will be forthcoming closer to the conference.

And… (Deliver More, Do More, Ask For More)
Bernard Aschwanden (sponsored by Adobe)
Just asking “and” seems like such a small thing. You deliver PDF, they say “and…” to which you need to reply “HTML5, Apps, eBook, etc”. You offer to create a User Guide, they say “and…” so you include Admin Guide, Reference Guide, Tutorials, and Support Docs. Push back. See how you can deliver more, and do more, regardless of tools or tech. Show that you add value to sales, support, marketing, IT, and every department in the organization. Then leverage that to ask for (and get) more. More conferences, more resources, more vacation time, and more influence. Show up, learn to deliver more, do more, and get more. While there, ask what else you can get. “And…”
Includes content strategy and topic based writing. Determine people, process, tools, output, then plan and create content. We play the roles of a few groups as well. End of the day we plan, write, publish.
Attendees should bring a laptop that can connect to the internet so that they can participate in an interactive fashion.
Bernard solves documentation-based problems and helps companies generate more revenue. He guides clients through the best processes to create, manage, and deliver content. Once content is delivered, he helps socialize the message, understand and act on feedback, and improve the process and workflow. He is the founder of Publishing Smarter, an Associate Fellow of STC, and a Past President of STC. Bernard has helped hundreds of companies implement successful solutions. He is focused on publishing better, publishing faster, and publishing smarter.
In 2017 and 2018 he spoke at: WritersUA, Adobe Day Canada, DITA-World, STC Rochester Spectrum, STC NEO, STC Philadelphia Conduit, Lavacon, CIDM RIDE, CIDM, and many other events both in person and online. He has presented for over 20 years and always draws large numbers to his sessions and has consistently been in the top 20% of all presenters at events.
